mango transformed this quaint mount pleasant home for an active family of four who had outgrown their space & desired a clean slate. it was important to maintain the homes craftsman character on the outside, but the inside could be fresh & modern! the original exterior shingles were retained and augmented, plank siding in charcoal grey was chosen for the base and cedar shakes & posts for a natural accent.
we added 400 sqft to the 2100 sqft home the in the form of a shed dormer at the front for the kids’ bedrooms and a gabled addition at the rear for the master bedroom and family bathroom. on the main floor, we removed walls to create a sun-filled, family friendly space, converted bedrooms into a laundry/mudroom & den and turned an old bathroom into a lovely powder room w/shower. the fully renovated basement houses a playroom, guest bedroom and 450sqft rented suite.
locally-made custom millwork is key to this homes’ success! mango designed the linear slab panel kitchen cabinetry layout with an island that extends into a wood dining table. the master bedroom features built-in closet systems with hidden tv cabinet. the bathroom features a wood tub surround with bench, upper storage and laundry chute to the mudroom below. there’s built-in linen storage in the hall and a bench w/shoe storage at the front entry. all cabinetry is a combination of painted maple, white oak & bamboo with birch interiors.
as with all mango’s projects, environmentally friendlier materials were used, including oiled white oak flooring, caeserstone countertops and low voc paint. the pendant over the stairs is by local lighting designer propellor.ca
